Best Used Cars 2011

Best Used Cars 2011
Bargains in used cars are increasingly harder to find. Fewer new-car sales over the past couple of years meant fewer trade-ins and vehicles coming off lease.

Plus, in the wake of the recession, buyers turned to used cars in a big way, tightening supply even more. We picked ten vehicles -- seven sedans, two SUVs and one convertible -- that received top scores in Kiplinger's rankings for performance, value and safety, get high marks for reliability, and won’t drain your wallet at the gas pump.

Dealer and private-party prices are based on actual transactions reported by Edmunds.com for previously owned vehicles considered to be in "clean" condition and driven an average of 12,000 miles a year. We also include the certified used price of each vehicle, based on actual sales. Certified vehicles pass a rigorous inspection and include a warranty that goes beyond the car's original warranty.

Spring Clean Your Body: Top 10 Detox Foods

Spring Clean Your Body: Top 10 Detox Foods

Want to baby your liver? Keep your GI tract fit? Flush out toxins? These 10 foods -- many of them chosen by RealAge experts Drs. Oz and Roizen -- can spring clean your body and keep refreshing your vital parts all year 'round. No need to fast. Just take these three steps:

"Eat clean," avoiding processed foods and chemical additives.
Stay well hydrated by drinking lots of filtered water.
Include some of these 10 foods in several meals throughout the week.

The Detox Top 10
  1. Leafy green vegetables. Eat them raw in a salad, throw them into a broth, steam them and mix with rice or add to an omelet, or puree them into juices. The chlorophyll in greens helps swab out environmental toxins (heavy metals, pesticides). It's also an all-around liver protector, which your liver needs since it's your major domo detoxifier.
  2. Lemons. Fresh lemonade made with filtered water will keep you hydrated, and its vitamin C helps convert toxins into a water-soluble form that's easily flushed away. (Add some pureed greens -- see above -- to further bolster your C level.) Here's another cleanse that really works.
  3. Watercress. Put a handful into salads, soups, and sandwiches. The peppery little green leaves have a diuretic effect that helps the flushing process. Plus cress is a mineral mine, rich in iron, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium.
  4. Garlic. Add it to everything -- salads, sauces, spreads. In addition to the heart-friendly bulb's cardio benefits, it activates liver enzymes. Research also indicates that garlic diminishes a process that creates cancer-causing compounds in your body.
  5. Green tea. This antioxidant-rich brew is one of the healthiest ways to get more water into your system. Bonus: It contains catechins, which speed up liver activity. Learn more about how to love your liver.
  6. Broccoli sprouts. They pack 20 times more cancer-fighting, enzyme-stimulating activity into each bite than the grown-up vegetable. Research suggests that eating the sprouts (they have a radish-like taste) kills off H. Pylori bacteria that causes stomach irritation and ulcers.
  7. Sesame seeds. They're credited with protecting liver cells from the damaging effects of alcohol and other chemicals. For a concentrated form, try tahini, the yummy sesame seed paste that's a staple of Middle Eastern cooking.
  8. Cabbage. There are two main types of detoxifying enzymes in the liver, and this potent veggie helps activate both of them. It's the largest member of the Brassica veggie family, all of which delivers colon-cancer fighting isothicyanates and vitamin C. Coleslaw, anyone?
  9. Psyllium. This plant's bursting with soluble fiber, which mops up toxins (cholesterol, too) and helps clear them out. Stir powdered psyllium into juice to help cleanse your colon, or have psyllium-fortified Bran Buds for breakfast. (Start with a small amount and gradually increase your dose as your GI tract becomes used to it.)
  10.  Fruits, fruits, fruits. They're full of almost all the good things listed above -- vitamin C, fiber, nutritious fluids, and assorted antioxidants. Besides, nothing tastes better than a ripe mango, perfect pear, or fresh berries.

Top 10 mobile phones

Top 10 mobile phones
10. Samsung Galaxy S
Though it has now been surpassed by the Galaxy S 2 (with its dual-core processor), the Galaxy S remains one of the best Android phones on the market - and now at a cheaper price.
9. LG Optimus 2X
The first of the new breed of super-powered smartphones that run on dual-core processors, this slim handset from LG also offers Full HD video recording and playback.
8. Google Nexus S
Google's latest Nexus ticks a lot of boxes, but loses marks for its rather plasticy shell and occassional lagging. We love the internet browsing experience, good battery life and its bright screen, though.
7. HTC Incredible S
Fancy the HTC Desire S but want a slightly bigger screen? This might be the handset for you, since it comes with a four-inch display (as opposed to the Desire S 3.7-inch screen).
6. HTC HD7
Our pick of the current crop of Windows Phone 7 mobiles, the HD7 has a huge, responsive screen and Microsoft's impressive new mobile operating system. A 'pro' version, with slide-out keyboard, can also be had.
5. HTC Desire S
HTC has quickly made a name for itself as a market-leading mobile manufacturer and the Desire S is one of its best. It's a strong upgrade on the original Desire and packs the latest version of Android.
4.Motorola Atrix
A powerhouse of a phone, with huge potential that just falls short of where we'd like it to be. The laptop docking option with the Atrix is a fantastic addition, but the experience could be improved. That said, it is overall a fantastic handset, and another leader among the growing Android clique.
3. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
The Xperia Arc is a stunner, thanks to its 4.2-inch display and wonderfully thin profile. It runs the latest version of the Android operating system and has a really excellent camera.
2. Apple iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 is a stunning smartphone backed up by the equally brilliant App Store. But after remaining our top handset for most of the past year, it's finally been knocked down into second place.
1. Samsung Galaxy S2
A Samsung is an absolute joy to use - so much so that we struggled to find a flaw with it. From its gorgeous Super AMOLED Plus screen to its super-fast processor and full HD video recording, it ticks all the boxes and then som.

Top 10 America's Most Expensive Homes for Sale 2011

Most Expensive Homes for Sale in the U.S.

Interested in a home with 23 bathrooms? Perhaps interior marble columns, a private grill house, or three swimming pools are the must-have amenities you’ve been waiting for? These features and more make up our 2011 list of the most expensive homes for sale on Zillow. All priced above $50 million, this year’s round-up is a mix of new extreme eye candy and some repeat performers from the 2010 list, including the Spelling Manor, which tops our list for a second time with an unchanged and staggering asking price of $150,000,000.

1. Spelling Manor

Location: Los Angeles, CA

For Sale: $150 Million
Not only does the Spelling Manor top our list of most expensive homes on Zillow for the second time in a row, but the 123-room mega-mansion, which hit the Los Angeles real estate market last September, is said to be the most expensive home for sale in the U.S. Current owner Candy Spelling (widow to late TV producer Aaron Spelling and mother to actress-turned-reality TV star Tori Spelling) purchased the property from legendary entertainer Bing Crosby. The French-chateau-style estate sits on 4.7 acres and illuminates luxury at every turn. Unique features of the three-story, 56-500-sq ft home include a 17,000-sq ft attic with a barbershop and salon, rooftop garden, two-lane bowling alley, service wing with staff quarters, China room, gift-wrapping room, and wine tasting room. According to a recent interview, the 63-year-old Spelling is downsizing from “The Manor” to a two-story Los Angeles condo she purchased for $47 million last year.
 2. Tranquility

Location: Zephyr Cove, NV

For Sale: $100 Million
Another most expensive homes veteran, “Tranquility” is the highest-priced listing in the state of Nevada. It also held the top spot on Zillow’s Most Expensive Homes list in 2009, until the Spelling Manor hit the market with its $150 million asking price. The 210-acre property, originally listed in 2008, is situated on its own private lake with a total of eight separate buildings including a 20,000-sq ft main residence. Also included on this rare piece of Zephyr Cove real estate is an art studio, boat house pavilion, gym with indoor basketball court, horse stable, two par-3 golf holes, and a 16-car garage. As if that wasn’t enough to explain the $100 million price tag, the prestigious property also comes fully furnished.
 3. Frank Woolworth Estate

Location: Manhattan, NY

For sale: $90 Million
Retail magnate Frank W. Woolworth commissioned three townhouses to be built for each of his three daughters back in 1911. This one, designed by renowned architect Charles Pierpont Henry Gilbert, was  completed in 1916 and is the biggest of the three. With a $90 million asking price, it became the priciest listing on the Manhattan real estate market when it was posted for sale this past March. The 35-ft wide, 7-story home boasts 18,000-sq ft,  and has 10 bedrooms, 11.5 bathrooms, three kitchens, a paneled library, elevator, 14-ft ceilings, private gym, and a formal dining room with seating for up to 50 guests.
 4. Versailles

Location: Windermere, FL

For Sale: $75 Million ($100 million finished)
It may not be the most expensive property on the market, but the gigantic Windermere, FL mansion, known as “Versailles,” is reported to be America’s “largest single family home under one roof.” The palace-like estate, architecturally inspired by the royal residence of Louis XIV, is situated on a 10-acre peninsula along the shoreline of Lake Butler. While the breathtaking property is still under construction, offered at $75 million “as-is” or $100 million finished, the 66,800-sq ft is blueprinted to include every thinkable amenity a homeowner could imagine. Listed in May 2010, this Windermere real estate gem features 13 bedrooms, 23 bathrooms, three pools, a baseball field, two tennis courts, grand hall, two grand staircases, two-story wine cellar, indoor roller rink, movie theater with a balcony, and his-and-her offices separated by a two-sided, 12-ft aquarium.

5. Madison Ave Townhouse

Location: Manhattan, NY

For Sale: $72 Million
Another 7-story New York townhouse joins the Woolworth mansion on this year’s list. This Madison Avenue home appeared on Zillow’s “Most Expensive Homes” list in September 2010 and, with an unchanged asking price of $72 million, has snagged a returning spot. Located on prestigious Madison Avenue, this rare piece of Upper East Side real estate is fully renovated and retains all of its original architectural details. It contains 12,000 sq ft, 10 bedrooms, a central staircase, and elevator. It is owned by a rare-maps dealer.

6. Wehba Mansion

Location: Beverly Hills, CA

For Sale: $68.5 Million
Owned by BentleyForbes founder, Fredrick Wehba, this 36,000-sq ft, French Palladian estate is showered with European-inspired elegance, including imported limestone, onyx marble, marble columns, antique mirrors, and French moldings with 24-karat gilt. Paired with 9 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, a tennis court, and pool pavilion, the Wehba Mansion is a Beverly Hills real estate rarity with an equally rare (and jaw-dropping) asking price of $68.5 million.

 7. Tranquility

Location: Jupiter Island, FL

For Sale: $65 Million
Believe it or not, there is another “Tranquility” mega mansion that falls onto our list, one that is also a returning member from last year’s round-up. Owned by PGA star Greg Norman (the “Great White Shark”), Jupiter Island’s version of Tranquility is a six-building compound that sits on over eight acres with 172 feet of oceanfront. In addition to the main house, there is a grill house that adjoins a 50-ft pool, tennis court, 3-bedroom coach house with 4-car garage, carriage house with a 6-car garage and gym, 2-bedroom oceanfront guest house, a boat shed, dock suited for a large yacht, and a 5,500-sq ft west lawn currently set up as the perfect waterfront putting green. Tranquility initially hit the Jupiter Island real estate market in 2008, with the same $65 million asking price.

8. Water Mill Mansion

Location: Water Mill, NY

For Sale: $58.5 Million
Located on Long Island, NY, Water Mill was listed as Forbes’ 14th most expensive ZIP code in 2010 and carries a median home value of $1,987,800 and even higher median list price of $3,200,000. The Water Mill mansion that ranks on this list, however, blows both median prices out of the water with an astounding eight-digit asking price of $58.5 million. Noted as a Water Mill real estate “masterpiece,” the 4-acre, waterfront estate consists of a 20,000-sq ft main residence that is outfitted with unique detailing throughout. Along with 8 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, features include a double-hearth staircase in cast bronze, silver and gold leaf, library with coffered ceilings, 19th-century, stained glass skylight, and 100-year-old mantelpieces. More modern amenities include a fully-automated remote-control security and entertainment system, restaurant grade kitchen, theater, wine storage room, spa, sauna, and private gym.

 9. Seven Lakes Ranch

Location: Meeker, CO

For Sale: $55 Million
Described as “one of the last premiere pristine ranches with water in all of Colorado,” Seven Lakes Ranch is the ultimate outdoorsman’s residence with over 11,000 acres, multiple lakes, a river and stream making it the perfect destination for fly fishing, private hunting, skeet shooting, horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, biking, and skiing. This massive property includes a main lodge, guest cabin, fitness center and spa, sportsman’s lodge, and barns. According to the listing information, this unique Meeker real estate retreat was assembled by the same owner of previously listed Tranquility – famed golfer Greg Norman.

 10. Beverly Hills Mansion

Location: Beverly Hills, CA

For Sale: $55 Million
Found at the end of a 400-ft long cobblestone driveway is yet another multi-million dollar, European-inspired mansion. The second Beverly Hills real estate property on the list is this 2-acre, gated residence described as “a masterful blend of art deco and European architectural styles” with a “dramatic French-inspired exterior.” Included in the $55 million price tag is a 27,163-sq ft main house with 8 bedrooms and 12.5 bathrooms, and a full guest house. For any car-collecting buyers out there, this Beverly Hills mansion is equipped with a 20-car garage, and an expansive motor court that can accommodate over 25 cars.

The 10 most stolen cars and trucks in america

 10. 2009 Toyota Corolla

Trade-In Value*: $11,100
Original Price in 2009: $15,910
New  Car Value (2011): $17,400

The Toyota Corolla is one of the “best loved cars in America” according to Kelley Blue Book. It rates high on maintenance and resale value — and it gets decent gas mileage. The 2011 had just “minor cosmetic changes,” which means parts from prior year models can be used in the newer models, which makes the car very attractive to car thieves.

 9. 2002 Ford Explorer

Trade-In Value: $4,350
Original Price in 2002: $27,775
New Car Value (2011): $30,000

The Ford Explorer is one of the most popular SUVs on the market. People love the vehicle because it has the functionality of an SUV but also has style and comfort. Because they’re so popular, Ford hasn’t made too many changes in subsequent models, except for improvements to safety and roominess. You know what that means — thieves love them for the parts.

 8. 1994 Acura Integra

Trade-In Value: $625
Original Price in 1994: $16,695
New Car Value (2011): N/A

The Integra makes the stolen list because it was a popular vehicle that Honda made from 1985 to 2007 that people liked to buy and soup up “Fast and Furious” style with everything from engine modification to enhanced suspension and blinged-up wheels, Keah explains.

What makes them even more desirable for car thieves is that they were easy to steal and the same parts were used from year to year.

 7. 1994 Chevrolet Pickup

Trade-In Value: $1,200
Original Price in 1994: $16,322
New Car Value (2011): $20,800

Pickup trucks like the 1994 Chevy S-10 are extremely popular, particularly in Texas and the south. In Texas, for example, they’re often stolen and then driven across the border into Mexico where they’re harder to recover.

 6.  2000 Dodge Caravan

Trade-In Value: $1,450
Original Price in 2000: $21,905
New Car Value (2011): $24,800

The Dodge Caravan is a popular minivan that is a big hit among soccer moms in places like Michigan and, as a result, thieves, who steal them for their parts. Thieves love the older models because they lack anti-theft devices and they have valuable parts like airbags and catalytic converters. The Caravan is so popular in Michigan, that five of the top 10 most stolen vehicles in Michigan are Caravans (the 2000, the 1999, the 1998, the 1997 and the 1996).

 5. 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup

Trade-In Value: $5,050
Original Price in 2004: $22,295
New Car Value (2011): $20,100

Pickup trucks like the Ram are stolen for valuable parts such as the wheels and tailgates, Keah said. Tailgates can often get mangled in an accident and the new ones are expensive to replace since they often have cameras for backing up in them. (A tailgate with a camera can set you back $1,000 to $1,500.) Plus, the older ones are easy to steal, he said.

 4. 1997 Ford F-150 Pickup

Trade-In Value: $1,200
Original Price in 1997: $17,480
New Car Value (2011): $22,600

Ford has been making its best-selling F-series pickup trucks since 1948 and for most of that time the F-150 has not only been the best-selling truck in America but the best-selling vehicle in America. That means there will always be a market for parts — and for thieves, who love those older models. 1997, incidentally, marked Ford’s first redesign of the F-150 since 1980. It was also the model where Ford introduced the rounded nose, a risky move given the F-150's popularity. To give buyers time to adjust to the change, Ford began selling the 1997s in January 1996, right alongside the 1996 models.

 3. 1991 Toyota Camry

Trade-In Value: $700
Original Price in 1991: $14,513
New Car Value (2011): $19,900

The top three cars are all popular sedans, including the 1991 Toyota Camry. What makes them attractive to thieves is that these makes and models are easy to steal and the parts don’t change much from year to year. The Camry is known for its quality and reliability and great resale value. As a result, it’s a popular target for thieves all across America, from Delaware to Florida, Kansas, California and Hawaii.

 2. 1995 Honda Civic

Trade-In Value: $1,100
Original Price in 1995: $11,970
New Car Value (2011): $17,400

The Civic gets great reviews and is one of the best-selling compact cars. People love them for their great fuel efficiency, reliability, repair history and resale value, according to Kelley Blue Book. It’s also pretty roomy inside, despite being a compact. Thieves love them for their parts. Cars like the Camry and Civic make the most-stolen list just about every year though the model year generally goes up one.

1. 1994 Honda Accord

Trade-In Value: $975
Original Price in 1994: $15,430
New Car Value (2011): $20,200

And the winner of the Most Stolen Vehicle contest is … the Honda Accord! The model year is 1994, the year that NAFTA was established, skater Nancy Kerrigan was clubbed in the knee with a pipe and O.J. Simpson took the entire nation on a high-speed chase.

The Accord is loved by both drivers and thieves and is universally stolen all over America. Drivers love it for its quality and refinement. It handles well, rates high on safety and maintenance and has a roomy interior. Thieves, of course, love them for their parts, which don’t change much from year to year, and for their lack of anti-theft technology.
