Passers by icy crash

Passers by icy crash, Passers-by rescue children after icy river crash, Former police officer Chris Willden didn't hesitate when he realized children were trapped in an upside down car in an icy Utah river. He pulled his handgun, pushed it up against the submerged windows and shot out the glass. Then he reached inside. "I was trying to grab arms, but I couldn't feel anything," Willden said. "I'm thinking ... what are we going to do?' But he turned to see up to eight other passers-by had scrambled down the embankment to help after coming upon the accident along U.S. 89 in Logan Canyon on Saturday afternoon. Highway Patrol Lt. Steve Winward said that after shooting out a window, the rescuer cut a seatbelt to free one child. He said the rescuers helped turn the Honda Accord upright in the Logan River. They lifted the car enough to free the three trapped children. The driver, Roger Andersen, 46, of Logan, had lost control of the car as he tried to brake while heading northbound in slippery conditions. His 9-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son were trapped along with a second 9-year-old girl.

"(The driver) was panicked, doing everything he could to get in through the doors, but they wouldn't budge," said Willden, who had jumped into the water with his own father. "I remember thinking to myself, 'You're going to see some dead kids, get ready. I've got three of my own and it was going to be (an awful) start to the New Year." Willden, who jumped into the water with his father, said he tried unsuccessfully to open windows and doors. He then used his firearm just as he had done in training for his current job as a bodyguard and Department of Defense contractor.

One of the girls had found an air pocket and was breathing fine but was trapped in her seat belt. Willden cut it with a pocket knife and pulled her from the rear passenger window. He said the other two children were lifeless, the boy upside down in his car seat and the second girl floating in the front passenger compartment. Both were pulled from the vehicle. Buzzy Mullahkel of North Logan told the Deseret News of Salt Lake City that the boy wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse but was revived when another passer-by performed CPR. "Emotions started taking over when he started to breathe. Everybody started to cheer. Lots of tears and clapping," said Mullahkel, a father of a 4-year-old.

Willden, 35 of Ogden, was wrapping up his bleeding forearms cut by the broken window when he heard cheers. "That was awesome," he said. "I knew that's where the little boy was. He would later learn both the boy and his sister, who were flown by air ambulance to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, had survived. Bonnie Midget, a hospital spokeswoman, said Sunday both are doing well after spending the night in intensive care. They were taken out of intensive care Sunday but still in the hospital, listed in fair condition as they recover from hypothermia. Winward said the father and the second girl escaped injury.
Mullahkel said the scene reminded him of another heroic rescue in Logan earlier this year.

In that case, bystanders lifted a burning car off an injured motorcyclist and pulled him to safety. The motorcyclist survived and is recovering from his injuries. "It was eerily similar," Mullahkel told the Deseret News. "Those men in the river just even now blow my mind. Look at these gentlemen, these men in this river in the middle of winter. Willden said simply there was a mission to be accomplished.

Pakistani Wife cooks husband Pakistan

Pakistani Wife cooks husband Pakistan,A Pakistani woman Zainab Bibi, 32, has been arrested after neighbors noticed a foul smell coming from her house. Her alleged crime: killing and then cooking her husband.
A Pakistani woman is being held on suspicion of killing her husband, cutting him up and trying to cook the pieces, Karachi police said Friday.

Zainab Bibi, 32, was arrested in connection with the murder Tuesday of her husband Ahmad Abbas, police said.

Her 22-year-old nephew, Zaheer Ahmed, is accused of helping Bibi stab Abbas to death and carve his body into small pieces.
Police said she wanted to cook her husband's body parts so she could dispose of them without being caught.

Neighbors raised the alert when they detected a foul odor in the neighborhood, police said.

Pakistan's domestic satellite channel ARY News spoke to Bibi in the police station where she is being held in the southern city of Karachi.

In an interview broadcast late Thursday, she claimed to have killed her husband because he wanted a physical relationship with their daughter -- and said she did not regret her actions.

"I killed my husband before he dared to touch my daughter," she told ARY News.

Loyal dog China grave:Loyal Dog Refuses to Leave Owner’s Grave in China

Loyal dog China grave:Loyal Dog Refuses to Leave Owner’s Grave in China,A loyal dog has held watch of its owner's grave in south of Beijing, China for more than a week. The dog has moved people of the Panjiatun village so much that they plan to build a kennel for him.

The dog belonged to owner Lao Pan, a single man, who died earlier this month aged 68.

After Pan's room was cleared the dog disappeared but villagers later found him by the grave of his owner. Reports have said that the dog has stayed by the side of the grave for more than seven days, refusing to leave.

Villagers have tried coaxing the dog away with food, after noticing that he was staying at the grave site unfed, and took the dog back to the village to give it some buns.

A concerned local tried to take the dog home with him, but to no avail.

"I gave him a steamed bun when he came to my home," he told the BBC.

But the dog took the buns and soon returned to the grave. Now villagers are regularly bringing food and water to the dog and plan to build him a kennel at the grave site.

The story is reminiscent of Edinburgh's Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier who remained at his master's grave for 14 years in Scotland in the mid-1800s.

Megyn Kelly pepper spray

Megyn Kelly pepper spray:Fox News' Megyn Kelly On Pepper Spray
Megyn Kelly pepper spray:Fox News' Megyn Kelly On Pepper Spray,Fox News commentator Megyn Kelly discussed the use of pepper spray by police at the Occupy Wall Street protest this weekend at the University of California Davis on "The O'Reilly Factor" late Monday. UC Davis Lt. John Pike sprayed non-violent protestors sitting on the ground with pepper spray in an act that has been questioned as perhaps being "excessive force."

"First of all, pepper spray," O'Reilly said to Kelly. "That just burns your eyes, right?"

"Right," Kelly replied. "I mean it's like a derivative of actual pepper. It's a food product, essentially."

Kelly's comment that pepper spray is little more than "a food product" has sparked outrage from protestors and commentators online. It has also led to the creation of an entirely new meme using the structure of her sentence followed by "essentially" on Reddit and QuickMeme.

The memes range in levels of offensiveness, but seek to mock Kelly's nonchalant attitude towards pepper spray despite evidence that it can cause serious health damages, including temporary blindness, gagging, uncontrollable coughing, throat, ear, eye and nose irritation as well as potential long term side effects, even death. The memes are sarcastic and aim to shed light on Kelly (and other's) dismissal of the dangers of pepper spray by calling into question (sarcastically) the dangers of other serious issues, like starvation, rape, domestic violence and human trafficking.

Moms form H.S. football cheerleading team

A football team without cheerleaders is like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on an onion roll -- it just doesn't make sense. The St. Ignace Saints, a high school team in Michigan, have no cheerleaders because of a lack of interest and a small student body of only 215 people. They do, however, have mothers who care.

Parents: cursing baby should not be sold

Parents: Cursing baby doll should not be sold,Doll sold at Toys R Us appears to say: 'Hey, crazy bitch'
Nationally sold baby dolls are causing a controversy because some say the toys say a bad word.

The "You & Me Interactive Triplets," which are being sold at Toys R Us stores in Orlando, are causing the uproar because one of the dolls can be heard saying what appears to be the phrase, "Hey, crazy bitch."

"Oh, absolutely.  She's calling them a crazy bitch," Kathy Wetter said.

The dolls are recommended for children ages 2 and older, and there is no warning of explicit language on the packaging.

Toys R Us said it has received a number of complaints about the doll but added that the doll is just making baby talk.

A mother told Local 6 News that she's worried her son might say the bad word.

"I don't want him repeating what's on there," she said.

Toys R Us said it has no plans to take the doll off its shelves, but told WKMG-TV that it would allow customers to return the toy with a receipt if they find it offensive.

"I think they should be burned, and I would like to write the (toy maker) a letter," another woman said.

“It’s a great moment to be re-connected with Yo! and examine the music that had a role in introducing hip-hop to music lovers globally,” Ed Lover said.

PETA wants Turkey to change its name

PETA wants Turkey to change its name-People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have asked the people of Turkey, Texas to change the name of their town to "Tofurky" on Thanksgiving.

PETA sent a letter to Mayor Pat Carson on Monday, offering to provide "a vegan feast" for the whole town if they agreed to make the switch.

Most of the citizens of Turkey had never tried the bean curd based alternative, so NBC affiliate KCBD sent a camera crew with a plate of samples and captured reactions from the town.

Here's a little of what they said:

"To change the name because of PETA - the name's not hurting anything."

"I've eaten tofu. I'm not a fan."

"This is more or less a beef and potato place."

"It's a proud little town. I wouldn't see them changing their name for a day."

"There's bigger problems in the world to worry about than what a town's name is."

"Turkey is ag-based. We've always been meat eaters."

"I think I like the real turkey better."

"I think I'll stick to beef."

"They can cook tofu on down the road as far as I'm concerned."

"They've got their own right but don't mess with Turkey."

The Mayor of Turkey, Texas was not available for comment on Tuesday, but the people have spoken.

Doctors see increase in 'sleep texting' (VIDEO)

Doctors see increase in 'sleep texting' Doctors noting increase in "sleep texting" Doctors say more people are paying the price for easy communications access with a disorder they call "sleep texting."

"I twist and turn for at least two or three hours before I actually fall asleep," said 16-year-old Elizabeth Hammonds.

When Hammonds finally falls asleep, the unexpected happens. Some people may experience night terrors, sleepwalking and even sleep eating, but for Hammonds, who carries her cell phone everywhere, it's sleep texting.

She doesn't realize she's sending text messages while she's sleeping until the next morning, thanks to her friends.

"You sent me a text message at three in the morning and I didn't know what you meant by it," she said.

Her mother, Betty, is equally stunned.

"She was telling me how she had texted somebody that said 'Close her door'," Betty Hammonds said.

It seems unbelievable, but the proof is captured on the phone.

"Then he showed me on his phone, I'm like, 'Are you really joking? I sent that to you, like at three in the morning?'," Hammonds said. "He's like, 'Yeah, you did'."

She's sleep texted words and sometimes random letters to friends. Sleep expert Dr. Marcus Schmidt says he's starting to see more cases of sleep texting.

"Four out of five kids that have cell phones sleep with the cell phone in the bedroom, next to their bed and only one in ten actually turn it off," Dr. Schmidt said.

He says sleep deprivation can trigger common motor behaviors during sleep, including reaching for the phone when it goes off.

To get a good night's sleep, doctors recommend leaving your cell phone somewhere else, so your fingers don't do the walking.

"As far away as possible and even out of the bedroom," Dr. Schmidt said.

He also suggests making your children go to bed a little earlier to decrease the desire to use the phone.

"They kind of get stuck in a no man's land, where they're not really fully awake, but yet feel the need or urge to be able to respond to that text message," Dr. Schmidt said.

But for a generation that's grown up with cell phones, is it likely children will keep them out of reach?

"Probably not," Elizabeth Hammonds said.

Dr. Schmidt says the phenomenon is so new, that there's not much research yet, but he knows it can be carried to extremes. One conservative young patient was alarmed to find herself sleep "sexting" - sending compromising photos of herself in her sleep. sleep eating, sleepwalking, night terrors, sleep texting might become more common once landline phones are extinct, Doctors noting increase sleep texting,

As more people give up landlines and use only cell phones, he thinks sleep texting will become more common.

'American Idol' final two chosen

'American Idol' final two chosen

If you had any doubt whether country or rock was our national anthem, 95 million “American Idol” voters put it to you plain and simple, the way they apparently like it.
Mama, let your children grow up to be cowboys and cowgirls because that’s who’s going to the finals of the top-rated Fox music competition next week.
On the "American Idol" results show, the final two singers were picked and a girl was sent packing . A new "X Factor" host Nicole Scherzinger also performed her latest single, Nicole Scherzinger right there with rapper 50 Cent.

In what seemed pre-ordained from the start of this 10th season, a pair of precocious teenagers are the finalists for the “Idol” crown, making it an all-Southern affair. North Carolina’s 17-year-old deep-voiced crooner Scotty McCreery and Georgia’s 16-year-old cheerleader next door Lauren Alaina might as well form a George Jones/Tammy Wynette duo right now because, as you can clearly sense, they’ll be fixtures of the Grand Ole Opry for decades to come.

McCreery captivated the “Idol” judges and public from the beginning with his mature-beyond-his-years rumble, as well as his light-hearted humor and self-deprecation. He literally grew before our eyes, from an All-American high school pitcher for his baseball team and a grocery bagger into an accomplished performer sharing the stage with the likes of Josh Turner, as he did in his recent homecoming.

The kid is genuine; what you see is pretty much what you get, and he enters next week’s final as the odds-on favorite to emerge as the show’s first male country winner. Whether he can actually turn into a male Taylor Swift is another story entirely. We still don’t know if the kid can write, but even if he can’t, he can have a long career as a kind of George Strait stylist. And he gets extra points for crying at his homecoming bash.

Lauren Alaina is another story, with some similarities and a few differences. She was touted even before the show began as a contender by executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, and ingratiated herself to the judges right away by joining Steven Tyler in a duet of “Sweet Surrender” in front of her family at the audition.

There is an “Idol” precedent for Alaina in previous winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, who both found success in the country world. Alaina could be Tanya Tucker if she learns to play off her sexuality, though she looks more like Tanya at age 25 going on 30. And I agree with the blogger who wondered why the stylists make her eyes up to look like Tammy Faye Bakker.
