Movies about the end of the world, or at least the end of the world as we know it, are among the most popular at the box office, with their history dating back decades to the early days of cinema. Many of these movies dramatise alien invasion and others, like I Am Legend and Planet of the Apes, depict an end of the world by mankind's own hand.

Movies showing natural disasters causing the end of the world are rarer but there are examples and the five below are perhaps the best so far. Please be aware, if you've not seen any of these movies, there are spoilers.
