TV anchor on the mend

Two days after she collapsed while running in Shadyside last Sunday, KDKA-TV news anchor Susan Koeppen is on the mend. Her 6 p.m. co-anchor, Stacy Smith, addressed her absence in the newsroom early in this evening's broadcast.

Noting that Kimberly Gill was subbing for his regular co-anchor, he said, "Susan suffered a heart-related problem related to a pre-existing valve condition. It was quite serious, but she is recovering nicely in the hospital."

She and her family, he said "want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers."

"Get well quickly, Susan," Mr. Smith said. Added Ms. Gill: "We all at KDKA were just devastated about this news."

KDKA anchors were expected to express similar sentiments on Tuesday's 11 p.m. broadcast.

Ms. Koeppen has been on the job at KDKA for two months, ending a long search that followed the retirement of Patrice King Brown. So far during her recovery, Ms. Gill has filled in at 6 and 11.
